Nic base mL = (target mg/mL × total mL) ÷ base mg/mL. Flavour mL = total × flavour %. The remaining volume is filled with PG and VG so the whole mix hits your target PG/VG ratio — accounting for the PG carried in by the nic base and flavour.

Mass uses standard densities: PG = 1.036 g/mL, VG = 1.261 g/mL, nicotine ≈ 1.01 g/mL. Two caveats if you mix by weight: flavour concentrate is weighed at PG density regardless of what you set Flavour PG to, and the nicotine base uses a flat 1.01 g/mL rather than tracking its own PG/VG split (a 100 mg/mL PG base is nearer 1.036, a VG base nearer 1.26). Those two rows will be slightly off; the millilitre columns are exact. If the calculator can't reach your target PG (e.g. you ask for 20% PG but your base + flavour already supply 25%), it will warn you and report the achievable ratio.

The Nicotine type selector (freebase vs salt) labels the recipe only — it does not change any number. Freebase and salt nic are mixed identically by volume; what differs is the strength you buy and how it feels to vape, so set the base strength field to match the bottle you actually have.

How it works

The recipe is solved volumetrically in four steps. Nicotine base mL = (target mg/mL x batch mL) / base mg/mL. Flavour mL = batch volume x flavour percentage. Whatever PG and VG those two carry in is subtracted from your PG and VG targets, and neat PG and VG fill the remaining volume. The gram column uses fixed densities of 1.036 g/mL for PG, 1.261 g/mL for VG and 1.01 g/mL for the nicotine base.

Nic base strength does the heavy lifting. At the default 100 mg/mL, a 60 mL batch at 3 mg/mL needs just 1.80 mL of base, whereas a 48 mg/mL base would need nearly 4 mL and force considerably more PG into the mix. Nic base PG and Flavour PG both default to 100%, which is right for most freebase nicotine and most concentrates. Target PG defaults to 30, giving the familiar 30/70 sub-ohm ratio.

Volumes are treated as additive and mixing contraction is ignored, so the gram figures are a close approximation rather than scale-accurate. Flavour is weighed as though it were pure PG whatever you set Flavour PG to, and the nic base is weighed at 1.01 g/mL regardless of its own PG/VG split. When your base and flavour already supply more PG than the target allows, added PG is capped at zero and the tool reports the ratio actually achieved.

Frequently asked questions

How much 100 mg/mL nicotine do I need for 60 mL at 3 mg?

1.80 mL. The formula is target strength times batch volume divided by base strength, so 3 x 60 / 100. The remaining 58.2 mL is split between flavour concentrate and the neat PG and VG you add.

Why can I not reach 90% VG in my mix?

Your base and flavour bring their own PG. With a 100% PG base and 10% flavour at 100% PG, a 3 mg/mL batch already contains 13% PG, capping you at 87% VG. The tool warns you, caps added PG at zero and reports the achievable ratio.

Should I mix e-liquid by weight or by volume?

Either, since the table gives both. Weighing is far more repeatable at small volumes, but remember the gram figures come from fixed densities (PG 1.036, VG 1.261) rather than any measurement of your specific bottles.

Does choosing salt nic change the calculation?

No. The Nicotine type dropdown only relabels the ingredient row; the arithmetic is identical for freebase and salts. What matters is the Nic base strength field, since salt concentrates are commonly 200 mg/mL rather than 100, so set that value yourself.

What happens if I ask for too much flavour?

If nicotine plus flavour exceeds the batch volume, the tool stops and asks you to lower the target nicotine, cut the flavour percentage, or move to a stronger base. The flavour field is capped at 30% and target nicotine at 60 mg/mL.

Dilution arithmetic with a concentrated input

Target strength, base strength and final volume together fix the nicotine base required; the remainder is flavouring and PG/VG. The arithmetic is simple and the inputs are not — the concentration printed on a nicotine base is a nominal figure, and it degrades over time with exposure to heat, light and air.

Freebase and salt nicotine are not interchangeable at the same strength. Salt nicotine is absorbed differently and is typically used at higher concentrations in lower-power devices, so converting a recipe between them by matching mg/ml misses the point of the difference.

Handling concentrated nicotine

Concentrated nicotine base is acutely toxic by skin contact as well as ingestion. Nitrile gloves, eye protection and a work surface that can be wiped are the baseline, and high-strength base should be stored where children and animals cannot reach it.

Mixing by weight on a 0.01 g scale is both more accurate and safer than by volume, since it avoids pipetting concentrated liquid.

The calculator does the arithmetic. It does not make the process safe, and it cannot verify that the base is the strength its label claims.
