What these tools are for
Gauge is the whole game in knitting and crochet, and it is the step most often skipped. Pattern sizes are expressed in stitches, not centimetres, so a garment only comes out the intended size if your stitches are the size the designer’s were. Two knitters with the same yarn and the same needles routinely differ by enough to change a size.
That means substituting yarn is a gauge question rather than a weight-label question. "Worsted" describes a broad band, and two yarns sold under it can knit up meaningfully differently, especially across fibre types where blocking behaves differently too.
Fabric yardage has a similar hidden variable: usable width after selvedge, and whether the fabric has a nap or a directional print that stops you nesting pattern pieces efficiently. Both push the real requirement above the geometric one.
