What these tools are for
Feeding guidance on a package is a starting point aimed at an average animal, and it is generally calculated for an intact adult at maintenance. Neutered animals, seniors, working dogs and growing puppies all sit meaningfully off that average, so a portion that matches the bag can still be wrong for the animal in front of you.
Body condition beats arithmetic. If ribs are hard to feel the portion is too large regardless of what any calculator says, and adjusting by roughly 10% and re-checking after a few weeks is more reliable than recalculating precisely.
Aquarium tools work on a different kind of estimate. Stocking rules of thumb such as the inch-per-gallon guideline ignore adult size, territoriality and bioload, all of which matter more than length. Treat a stocking figure as a ceiling to stay under, not a target to fill.
