What these tools are for
Livestock feed planning is mostly about the gap between what an animal needs and what a bale or bag actually contains. Hay is bought by weight but stored and fed by the bale, and bale weights vary enormously — a small square might be 20 kg and a large round ten times that, so a plan expressed in bales without a weight is not a plan.
Consumption is not constant either. Cold weather raises maintenance requirements substantially, and waste from feeding on the ground rather than in a feeder can run to a fifth of what you put out.
Bee syrup is the most exacting of these, because the ratio is the instruction: roughly 1:1 sugar to water by weight stimulates brood rearing in spring, while 2:1 is for autumn stores. Mixing the wrong one at the wrong time works against the colony rather than for it.
