Barbell Plate Math: How to Load Any Target Weight Per Side
Why loading a barbell is a per-side problem, how the greedy 'heaviest plate first' method works, why bar weight and plate inventory change the answer, and how to handle weights your plates can't hit exactly.
You walk up to the bar with a number in your head — 100 kg, 225 lb, whatever today’s working set calls for — and then comes the small arithmetic puzzle that everyone fumbles at least once: which plates go on, and how many? Load it wrong and you either grind out a set that’s secretly 10 kg light, or you misjudge the jump and stall. The math isn’t hard, but it has three traps in it that catch people constantly. Here’s how barbell loading actually works, and why the answer changes with your bar and your plate set.
It’s a per-side problem, not a total
The first thing to internalise is that a barbell is symmetric. Whatever you put on the left, you put on the right, or the bar tips and the lift is unsafe. So you never really load “100 kg” — you load the plates for one side and mirror them. That means the working number isn’t your target at all. It’s:
per-side weight = (target − bar) / 2
The bar itself is dead weight you get for free. A standard Olympic men’s bar is 20 kg (45 lb); a women’s bar is 15 kg (35 lb); a trap bar is heavier still at around 27 kg; an EZ-curl bar is about 10 kg. Subtract that first, then halve. For a 100 kg target on a 20 kg bar, you’re loading (100 − 20) / 2 = 40 kg per side — not 50, and definitely not 100. Forgetting to subtract the bar is the single most common loading error, and it always makes you over-order plates.
The greedy method: heaviest plate that still fits
Once you know the per-side number, loading is a “greedy” algorithm — the same logic you use for making change. You take the heaviest plate that doesn’t overshoot, subtract it, and repeat until you reach zero (or as close as your plates allow). For 40 kg per side from a standard kg set:
- Heaviest that fits: a 25 kg plate. Remainder 15.
- Next: a 15 kg plate. Remainder 0. Done.
So 40 kg per side is a 25 and a 15 — two plates, not eight little ones. Greedy loading isn’t just tidy; it’s faster to load, easier to read at a glance, and easier to strip down between sets. Your plate inventory changes the answer
Here’s the trap that the gym’s loaded-up demo bar never shows you: the “best” loading depends on which plates you actually own. A commercial gym with deep racks of 25s, 20s, 15s, 10s, 5s, 2.5s and 1.25s can hit almost any sensible number. A home setup with one pair of 20s, one pair of 10s and one pair of 5s cannot. Ask that home set for 35 kg per side and greedy gives you 20 + 10 + 5 — fine. Ask it for 37.5 and you’re stuck, because there’s no 2.5 and no 1.25 in the box.

This matters most for the small fractional plates (0.5 kg, 0.25 kg, the lb micro-plates) that make the difference between a clean progression and a stalled one.
When the number isn’t reachable
Some targets simply can’t be built exactly. With standard kg plates the smallest jump per side is the lightest plate you own, so the bar moves in steps of twice that. If your smallest plate is 1.25 kg, the bar’s finest resolution is 2.5 kg total; ask for something in between and the honest answer is “here’s the nearest you can load.” The calculator reports that closest achievable weight and flags it, rather than silently rounding and letting you believe you hit the number. For most training that’s completely fine — a kilo here or there rarely matters — but it’s better to know you’re a touch under than to log a PR that wasn’t.
Plan the jump, not just the set
The other place loading math bites is progression. “Go up by 5 kg” sounds simple until you realise that’s only 2.5 kg per side, which means adding one 2.5 plate to each end — assuming you have them. If you don’t, your real smallest jump might be 10 kg total, which is a brutal step on a near-max lift. Knowing your inventory’s finest increment ahead of time lets you plan micro-loading (those 1.25 kg and 0.5 kg plates exist precisely for this) instead of discovering mid-workout that your next “small” jump is anything but.
Put it together
Loading a barbell is three moves: subtract the bar, halve the remainder, then load heaviest-plate-first within the plates you actually have — and accept the nearest reachable weight when the exact number isn’t buildable. Get those right and you’ll never again finish a set wondering whether the bar was really what you thought.
