How Much Hay Does a Horse Eat? Turning the 1.5–3% Rule into a Buying Plan
Why there's no single answer to how much hay a horse eats, the 1.5-3% of body weight rule equine nutritionists actually use, why horses need near-constant forage access, and how to turn a daily percentage into a real hay-buying budget.
Ask five horse owners how much hay their horse eats and you’ll get five different answers — 15 pounds a day, a flake in the morning and one at night, “half a bale,” or “however much is left when I check the field.” None of them are wrong exactly, but none of them are a plan either. The honest answer to “how much hay does a horse eat” isn’t a single number at all — it’s a percentage of the horse in front of you, and that percentage moves depending on the animal, the season, and the job the horse is doing. Once you know the range and why it shifts, you can turn it into an actual number of bales and an actual dollar figure before hay season starts.
The rule of thumb: 1.5-3% of body weight per day
Equine nutritionists have converged on a simple starting point: a horse should eat somewhere between 1.5% and 3% of its body weight per day in forage. For a 1,000 lb horse, that’s a floor of 15 lb and a ceiling of 30 lb of hay a day — a two-fold swing that explains why two “average” horses on two different farms can have wildly different feed bills.
Most healthy adult horses at maintenance — not pregnant, not nursing, not in heavy work, not notably over or underweight — land close to the middle of that range, around 2% of body weight per day. That’s the default most calculators (including ours) start from, and it’s a reasonable first guess for a horse you don’t know much about yet. But “reasonable first guess” is exactly why the range exists: it’s a starting point to adjust from, not a number to lock in and forget.
Why the range is so wide
The 1.5-3% spread isn’t padding for uncertainty — it reflects real, measurable differences between horses:
- Body condition. An easy keeper or an overweight horse that gains weight looking at grass may need to sit near the 1.5% end, sometimes with a lower-calorie hay (like mature grass hay) rather than a rich alfalfa mix, so the horse isn’t overfed while still getting enough forage volume.
- Workload. A trail horse ridden twice a week burns very different calories than a horse in daily training or competition. Harder-working horses need more energy, which often means climbing toward 2.5-3%, frequently supplemented with grain or concentrate on top of the forage.
- Life stage. Growing horses building bone and muscle, and pregnant or lactating mares supporting a foal, have elevated nutritional needs and commonly need to be fed nearer the top of the range as well.
- Metabolism and breed. Some breeds and individual horses are simply harder to keep weight on (“hard keepers”) and need more forage and calories to maintain condition, independent of workload.
- Climate. Horses burn extra energy staying warm in cold weather, which can nudge intake upward in winter even when nothing else about the horse has changed.
In practice this means the percentage isn’t something you set once — it’s something you watch and adjust as the horse’s body condition, workload, and the season change through the year.
Why “near-constant” access matters more than the daily total
It’s tempting to treat the daily hay total like a single scoop of grain — deliver a fixed number of pounds once or twice a day and move on. Horses don’t work that way. Unlike a grain meal, which is digested in the stomach and small intestine over a few hours, forage is processed continuously by fermentation in the hindgut, and a horse’s digestive system is built around the assumption that there’s almost always a little bit of fiber moving through it.
When that assumption is broken — when a horse goes several hours with an empty stomach because the daily hay ration got eaten too fast — the risks aren’t hypothetical. Extended gaps without forage are linked to a higher incidence of gastric ulcers, because stomach acid keeps being produced whether or not there’s fiber there to buffer it. Gaps in forage availability are also a recognized risk factor for colic. This is precisely why the advice for easy keepers is never simply “feed less” — it’s “feed a lower-calorie forage, but keep it available.” A horse restricted to 1.5% of body weight in a rich hay still needs that hay spread out or supplemented with a lower-calorie filler (like a slow feeder full of mature grass hay) so the gut keeps moving, rather than being cut off cold for stretches of the day.
Hay is forage, not the whole diet
One more distinction matters before you start budgeting: the 1.5-3% figure covers forage only — hay or pasture. It does not include grain, ration balancers, or other concentrated feed some horses get on top of their hay. A horse in hard work might eat 2% of its body weight in hay and also get several pounds of grain to cover the extra calories that forage alone can’t supply. If you’re estimating total feed cost, hay is the foundation, but it isn’t the whole bill for every horse.
From percentage to purchase order
Once you have a daily percentage that fits your horse, turning it into a buying plan is just arithmetic — but it’s arithmetic worth doing before you commit to a hay supplier for the season, because the two common bale formats behave very differently:
- Small square bales run around 50 lb each. They’re easy for one person to carry, stack neatly in a barn or garage, and let you buy in small batches — but they cost more per pound and mean more trips hauling and stacking.
- Large round bales run around 1,000 lb — twenty times the hay in one unit. They’re usually far cheaper per pound and mean far fewer bales to track, but you need equipment (a tractor with a spear or forks, at minimum) to move one, and once it’s opened and exposed to weather you’re racing spoilage and mold before a single horse can work through a thousand pounds of hay alone.
Here’s the math worked through for a common case: a 1,000 lb horse eating 2% of body weight per day, over a 30-day supply period.
daily hay per horse = 1,000 lb × 2% = 20 lb/day
total hay needed = 20 lb/day × 30 days = 600 lb
With small square bales at ~50 lb each:
bales needed = ceil(600 / 50) = 12 bales
At $8 a bale, that’s 12 × $8 = $96 for the month for one horse. Add a second horse on the same ration and the total hay need doubles to 1,200 lb — 24 small bales, or, notably, just two large round bales (2,000 lb of capacity for 1,200 lb of need, with some left over) if you have the equipment and storage to handle round bales instead. That comparison is exactly where the bale-format decision starts to matter for your budget: more horses and longer supply windows are often the point where switching from small squares to round bales makes financial sense, provided you can move and store them without losing hay to weather.
