How Much to Feed Your Dog: A Real Calorie-Based Portion Guide

Why the feeding chart on your dog food bag is only a rough starting point, how RER and life-stage multipliers actually determine a dog's daily calories, and how to adjust portions by body condition instead of guesswork.

Every bag of dog food has a feeding chart on the back — “20-30 lb dog: 1 to 1.5 cups per day” — and it’s almost useless. It doesn’t know your dog is neutered, doesn’t know whether they’re a couch potato or run five miles a day with you, and it’s usually rounded to whichever number makes the bag last a plausible amount of time on the shelf. Two 25-pound dogs of different ages and activity levels can have genuinely different calorie needs, and the chart gives them the same scoop.

The good news is that the actual science behind calorie needs isn’t complicated — it’s a formula vets use every day, and once you understand the pieces, portioning your own dog’s food takes thirty seconds.

The formula: RER, then a life-stage multiplier

The starting point is Resting Energy Requirement (RER) — the calories a dog burns just existing, lying on the couch, with no activity factored in at all. It’s calculated from body weight using an allometric (non-linear) formula:

RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)^0.75

The 0.75 exponent matters — calorie needs don’t scale directly with weight. A 40 kg dog doesn’t need exactly twice the calories of a 20 kg dog; because of how metabolic rate scales with body mass, it needs a bit less than double. This is why simple “calories per pound” rules of thumb break down badly at the small and large ends of the weight spectrum.

RER alone isn’t what a dog should eat, though — it’s a baseline. Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) takes RER and multiplies it by a life-stage factor:

Puppies need roughly double or triple their resting calories because they’re building bone, muscle and organs on top of daily activity. Neutering typically lowers metabolic rate slightly (the ×1.6 vs ×1.8 split), which is part of why many dogs put on weight after the surgery if their portion isn’t adjusted down to match. Senior dogs generally need fewer calories as lean muscle mass and activity naturally decline with age.

Activity level moves the number further

On top of the life-stage multiplier, activity level scales the total up or down:

  • Sedentary (minimal exercise): ×0.9
  • Normal (daily walks): ×1.0
  • Active (regular runs, hikes, play): ×1.2
  • Very active / working dog (sled, herding, extended field work): ×1.4

A sedentary neutered adult and a very active neutered adult of the same weight can differ by more than 50% in daily calorie needs — which is exactly why a single number on a food bag can’t be right for both.

Weight goals change the math too

If your dog needs to lose weight, the formula switches — target intake for weight loss is generally set at RER × 1.0 (resting calories only, no activity multiplier layered on), which creates a calorie deficit that supports gradual, safe loss without starving the dog. For weight gain, the multiplier is bumped up, generally to at least ×1.6 of RER or 20% above whatever the dog’s normal maintenance multiplier would be. Weight changes in either direction should be gradual — aim for the dog to lose or gain roughly 1-2% of body weight per week, and involve a vet if a dog needs to lose more than about 10% of its body weight.

From calories to cups: reading the food label correctly

Once you know the daily calorie target, converting to a portion means dividing by your food’s kcal per cup, which varies more than most owners expect — anywhere from roughly 300 to 450+ kcal per cup depending on the brand and formula (calorie-dense “performance” or grain-free formulas run especially high). This number is usually printed on the bag as “kcal/cup” or “kcal ME/kg,” and it’s the single most important number for getting portions right, because two brands can have wildly different calorie density for the same cup measurement.

A standard dry kibble cup weighs roughly 100 grams, though this varies with kibble size and shape — a scale is more accurate than a measuring cup, since cup measurements of kibble can vary 10-20% just based on how the food is scooped and settled.

Adjust based on what you actually see, not just the formula

No formula accounts for individual metabolism perfectly — genetics, breed, and even a specific dog’s gut efficiency all cause real variation. Treat the calculated number as a starting point, then adjust based on body condition score: you should be able to feel your dog’s ribs with light pressure but not see them prominently, and there should be a visible waist tuck when viewed from above. If your dog is gaining unwanted weight, cut the daily total by about 10% and hold for two weeks before reassessing; if they’re losing weight they shouldn’t be, add 10%. Weigh your dog every 2-4 weeks during any adjustment period so you’re working from real data, not impressions.

Splitting the day into meals

Once you have a daily total, splitting into 2, 3 or 4 meals is mostly about your dog’s digestion and your schedule rather than the total calorie math — the total stays identical either way. Puppies generally do best on 3-4 smaller meals a day since their stomachs are small and their energy needs are high; adult dogs are commonly fed twice a day, which also helps prevent the stomach distending on one huge meal (a modest bloat-risk factor in large, deep-chested breeds).

Frequently asked questions

Should treats count toward the daily total? Yes. The general rule is treats shouldn’t exceed 10% of daily calorie intake; if you’re giving significant treats, reduce the meal portions to compensate so the dog’s total calories stay on target.
