How Much Feed Does Your Flock Actually Need? A Chicken Keeper's Guide
The rule-of-thumb feed rates for bantams, standard layers and meat birds, why cold weather and free-ranging change the math, and how to turn a daily rate into a monthly or yearly feed budget.
Every new chicken keeper asks the same question within the first week of owning a flock: how much feed am I actually supposed to buy? The bag says nothing about your six hens, the internet gives you five different numbers, and the hardware store clerk shrugs and sells you whatever’s on the shelf. The good news is that backyard flocks are predictable enough that a single rule of thumb gets you most of the way to an accurate feed budget — you just need to know which number applies to your birds and which factors nudge it up or down.
The baseline: about a quarter pound per bird per day
For a standard-sized laying hen — a Rhode Island Red, Leghorn, Australorp, or any of the common dual-purpose breeds — the widely used planning figure is roughly 0.25 lb (about 113 g) of feed per bird per day. It’s not a law of nature, just an average that holds up well across thousands of backyard flocks: a hen eating free-choice layer feed with no other food source will typically settle into consuming somewhere around a quarter pound daily once she’s fully grown.
That one number is doing a lot of work, though, because “standard layer” is really the middle of a spectrum:
- Bantams, being roughly a quarter to a third the body weight of a standard hen, eat proportionally less — around 0.125 lb (roughly half the standard rate) per bird per day. If you keep a mixed flock of bantams and standard birds, don’t average them together; count them separately or your feed estimate will run high.
- Standard layers sit at the 0.25 lb/day baseline described above.
- Meat birds and broilers are a different animal entirely. Bred specifically to convert feed into muscle as fast as possible, a Cornish Cross or similar meat bird will eat around 0.4 lb per day or more, and that appetite climbs steeply as the bird approaches market weight — a six-week-old broiler eats meaningfully more than a two-week-old chick. Because their feed intake curve isn’t flat the way a mature layer’s is, treat any single-rate estimate for meat birds as an average across the grow-out period rather than a fixed daily number.

Why the same flock eats more in winter
If you’ve kept chickens through a full year, you’ve probably noticed the feed bill climbs in December and drops in July. That’s not your imagination. Chickens are warm-blooded, and maintaining body temperature costs calories — the colder the air, the more of their daily feed intake goes toward simply staying warm rather than growing, laying, or moving around. A flock that eats a steady 0.25 lb/bird/day in mild fall weather can easily creep up 10-20% once nighttime temperatures drop toward freezing, especially for breeds without heavy cold-weather feathering.
The flip side also matters: in the depths of summer heat, birds often eat less than the baseline, partly because they’re less active and partly because heat stress suppresses appetite. Free-ranging and scraps: a discount, not a replacement
Letting your flock free-range or supplementing with kitchen scraps and garden waste absolutely reduces purchased feed consumption — birds that spend the afternoon hunting bugs, scratching up grubs, and pecking at weeds are getting real calories from the yard, not the feeder. But it’s important to treat this as a discount on the baseline rate, not a substitute for it. Foraged food is inconsistent day to day (a rainy week means fewer bugs), doesn’t supply the same complete nutrition profile as a formulated layer feed, and varies enormously by season and yard size. Most keepers with generous free-range access find their birds eat somewhere in the range of 10-30% less purchased feed than a fully confined flock, but there’s no reliable formula for the exact number — it depends entirely on what’s actually available to peck at. The honest approach is to start with the standard rate, track your actual bag consumption over a few weeks, and adjust the feed-rate input down to match reality once you have real data.
Turning a daily rate into a buying plan
Once you have a daily-per-bird rate you trust, the rest is arithmetic — but it’s arithmetic worth doing properly rather than eyeballing at the feed store. The chain is: daily rate × number of birds gives you flock-wide daily consumption; multiply that by the number of days you want to plan for (a month, a season, a year) to get total pounds needed; divide by your bag size and round up to get the number of bags to buy; multiply by price per bag for total cost.
Worked example: six standard layers at the 0.25 lb/bird/day baseline eat 6 × 0.25 = 1.5 lb of feed per day as a flock. Over a 30-day month, that’s 1.5 × 30 = 45 lb of feed. At a common 40 lb bag size, that rounds up to 2 bags (45 ÷ 40 = 1.125, ceiling to 2), and at $20/bag that’s $40 for the month.
